Design Considerations: For elevated swimming pools, spas and water features, the first design issue is choosing the type of water basin construction. Stainless steel, reinforced concrete, aluminum and fiberglass have been used as pond shells with varying degrees of success and (notable) failures. Installation cost, waterproofing, long term reliability, weight and visual appearance are factors to be considered in the choice of the pond shell construction. The configuration and size also play an important factor. With concrete shell construction, the installation of multiple (redundant) layers of waterproofing is required. All elevated water features systems should have provisions for leak detection, deflection and disposal.
